I'm a little confused on these ones... (periodic table stuff)?

What do they mean when they say: name the ionic compound that forms when each of the following pairs of elements are combined chemically??? They enlist an example like this sodium and iodine. My guess is that it would be sodium iodide right? I get confused when they say "ionic compound". NaI right? Because sodium has a positive charge and Iodine has a negative charge= crossing eachother out. Am I wrong? Or did I just answer my own question?
